Since 1938

Our Tallahassee Story...

Since 1938 Tallahassee Nurseries has been a vital part of the Tallahassee Community. What started as only five acres of fresh produce has now grown into a fabulous garden experience, complete with a flower/gift shop, garden center and greenhouse!

When Ruth and Eugene Ellis, Sr., began Tallahassee Nurseries in 1938, the present site was still in the country on the northern edge of town. They sold fresh produce and propagated an extensive collection of Azaleas and Camellias, which were grown in the ground and transplanted when they were sold.

By the time their son Gene Ellis took over the business, the science of growing plants in containers meant nurseries could sell a wide selection of plants year around. Gene and his partner Dan Prosser built the business into a modern garden center with a full service landscaping division.

In 2002, Paul Brock and Nate Prosser (both long time employees) bought the business and have continued to develop it into the city’s premier gardening center. Today, Tallahassee Nurseries is a fabulous shopping experience complete with a flower and gift shop, garden center, and greenhouse.

As a small business, we are proud to support local non-profit organizations and provide employment for 65 full and part time employees.

Meet the Owners

Paul Brock loved plants as a child, His interest in flowers, plants, and horticulture were fueled by neighbors and friends. At the age of 15, while attending Maclay High School, Paul began working part time at Nesmith’s Nursery where he was mentored by Jimmy Nesmith for 8 years.

When he began working for Gene Ellis at Tallahassee Nurseries in 1984, Paul enjoyed working in every facet of the business. He managed the Tharpe Street location and later returned to manage the main store. When Gene and Dan retired in 2001, Paul graciously accepted the opportunity to become part owners with Nate.

Nate Prosser enjoys the challenge of running a business and working with the public. “I love solving peoples’ problems,” he says, “I love to make ‘em smile!” Nate grew up in this area and has lived at Lake Talquin all his life. After graduating from Godby High School, he majored in Business Management at FSU and started work at Tallahassee Nurseries in the Fall of 1994.

In 2002, as a co-owner at Tallahassee Nurseries, Nate took charge of the Landscape Division. With top-notch landscape designers and installation crews dedicated to top quality customer service, Tallahassee Nurseries has maintained its goal as being the premier landscape service provider in the area. “We are where we are because of our loyal community,” Nate says. “We love our customers and enjoy creating beautiful landscapes.”
